October 22, 2007 We’ll start with the good… Um… Well… Jason Taylor returned an interception for a touchdown, which is nice… Now for the bad… That interception came against their backup quarterback, and not because Tom Brady got hurt. It was because the Patriots were up 42-7 at halftime. Also, Ronnie Brown, the only thing right with our team, tore the ACL in his right knee. Also Renaldo Hill, part of our already talent-depleted secondary tore the ACL in his right knee too and both will be out for the season. Let that sink in a little bit.
This game reminded me of college football in a lot of ways. The Dolphins reminded me a lot of a college team where you have All-Americans who will be top draft picks (Taylor, Brown) playing next to guys who will be carpenters next year (Worrell, Allen). It was infuriating watching Randy Moss catch consecutive touchdowns in double coverage, one he actually ripped right from Worrell, but it was like college. Cameron Worrell is not good enough to play on an NFL level and he never will be. If you have him guard Randy Moss, this is what happens. Mostly it was like college because that is the only place you see games this lopsided. Last week our secondary made Derek Anderson look like Tom Brady, this week they made Tom Brady look like some kind of god (158.3 QB rating, 6 TD’s in 3 Quarters). Jason Allen can’t tackle, Cameron Worrell can’t cover, but none of this is news. Joey Porter got a sack, the O-Line is getting a lot better, and Jason Taylor made a play which will hopefully let us get a better draft pick for him, but this is getting rough to watch. I understand it’s now a rebuilding team, but if we can’t win, I want at least not to be humiliated. That starts with not letting teams return kickoffs for touchdowns.
Let Zach Thomas do our Kickoffs This game was like watching someone play Madden against a toddler, being a total douchebag the whole time; fake spikes, kickoff returns for touchdowns, the whole nine yards. So far this year, we have allowed two kickoffs to be returned for touchdowns, and not against Devin Hester. Jay Feely is a great kicker, but we need as many competent tacklers on the field as possible when we do kickoffs. With Jason Allen on the field, I’m not even sure that Jay Feely is the worst tackler out there, but having Zach Thomas kicking off for us insures that we have one guy who can properly execute a tackle. I understand this whole rebuilding thing and I have made my peace with the fact that we probably won’t win the next nine games straight and go to the Super Bowl, I just don’t want this team to be a joke. As a grown man, wearing aqua and orange together feels silly enough without the added insult of cheering for a team that can’t even make the most basic plays. The Patriots didn’t become the Patriots overnight, but they started with solid fundamentals. Are there really not 11 unsigned guys on this planet who can stop some backup no-name kick returner from taking it to the house? |
